What is Cold Laser Therapy?

Cold laser therapy is a treatment that uses low-force laser beams to stimulate healing on injured or damaged tissues. "Cold," in this case, doesn't imply that the laser temperature is low. Cold means that the laser's power output is significantly lower than that of powerful lasers used to remove tissue and kill tumors.

Unlike high level lasers used for surgery and cosmetic treatments, the cold laser medical devices do not heat the tissue under treatment. In a clinical setting, doctors commonly use it on patients suffering from different chronic and acute medical conditions to treat pain, swelling, and spasms. Cold laser treatment is also known as:

  • Photobiomodulation (Low level laser therapy, or LLLT)
  • Soft laser biostimulation
  • Low-power laser treatment (LPLT)
  • Light therapy
  • Phototherapy

How Cold Laser Therapy Works

The treatment is carried out using cold laser devices. These handheld gadgets are placed over your injured area for a period of between 30 seconds and several minutes. The treatment time will depend on the size of the treatment area, the size of the emitter, and the power level. For example, clinical lasers with a bigger emitter (aka Broad Treatment Therapy) will cover a larger area more efficiently than those with a small emitter. Similarly, medical lasers with high power levels will subsequently emit higher doses to the treatment area in a shorter period of time.

During this time, small amounts of light energy transmitted from the laser go through the skin's layers. The laser's light goes through the dermis, epidermis, and the subcutaneous tissue layers of the skin. This light can enter 2-5 centimeters beneath the skin at 90 megawatts (mw) and 830 nanometers (nm). At a higher wavelength, the light will penetrate more deeply.

When the light energy goes through the layers of skin and reaches the intended zone, it is absorbed and interacts with the cell's light-sensitive components.

The absorbed light initiates processes in the cell, and these processes help damaged or injured tissue function normally. They also provide pain relief by releasing natural pain killer endorphins; reduce swelling; and increase intracellular metabolic rate for faster, more enhanced healing.

What Are the Treatment Uses for Cold Laser Therapy?

Medical practitioners use cold laser therapy in several ways. The suggested clinical uses for therapeutic laser treatment are for pain relief, tissue repair, and swelling reduction.

Cold laser therapy stimulates all cells in the body, working on muscles, ligaments, tendons, bone, and cartilage. These healing lasers are therefore used to treat many clinical conditions, including:

  • Tendonitis
  • Neck pain
  • Knee pain
  • Fibromyalgia pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Back pain
  • Arthritis pain

Minor sprains and injuries: In sports and with physical therapy practitioners, cold laser treatment helps reduce inflammation, encourage muscle relaxation, and heal soft tissues and joints. Cold laser therapy treats minor sprains and injuries such as ligament sprains, bursitis, and pain caused by muscle spasms.

Inflammation: Doctors use cold laser treatment to treat inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and other chronic autoimmune diseases. Dentists use cold laser therapy to treat inflamed tissues in the mouth and heal ulcerations.

Aches and Pains: Pain-management clinics use this treatment for people with pain commonly seen with chronic conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and fibromyalgia.

Skin Treatment and Wound Healing: Cold laser treatment treats difficult–to-heal wounds such as those caused by diabetes. Dermatologists also use it to treat various skin issues, including:

  • Vitiligo
  • Psoriasis
  • Edema, or swelling of the skin
  • Dermatitis and rashes
  • Burns
  • Acne and acne scars

Laser Trigger Point Therapy: Acupuncture is a form of treatment where a professional inserts thin needles into the skin. Acupuncture helps reduce pain and also aids in stress management. For patients who fear needles, acupuncturists use cold lasers to perform the same function without piercing the skin, known as Laser Trigger Point Therapy or Laser Acupuncture.

Other Diseases: Scientists are carrying out research on further treatment possibilities of cold laser light therapy for more severe diseases and conditions, such as:

  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Stroke
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Parkinson's sickness
  • Alzheimer's sickness

Does the Treatment Work?

The first cold laser was approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in 2001. Currently, there are more than 20 cold laser devices approved by the FDA, which means that cold laser products are deemed safe and have little to no side effects. Additionally, scientific evidence from more than 2,500 clinical studies indicate that cold laser therapy is effective in treating chronic pain.

Major Advantages of Cold Laser Treatment

Cold laser treatment is a non-invasive method, so there is no need to go under anesthesia or be cut open. The treatment also has almost no downtime, so you can immediately go back to your daily routine as soon as it's over.

Likewise, the cold lasers are a great alternative to traditional treatments such as addictive prescription drugs, which helps patients who are averse to medication or worry about drug sensitivities. If you are looking for an alternative method to deal with pain, try cold laser treatment today.

Dr. Roby Taylor Myers, Owner & Lead Chiropractor at East Coast Elite Chiropractic-Sports Performance & Rehab

I appreciate all the support over the last 2 years while setting up my new practice. I have had successful results with over 90-95% of my patients with disc injuries/ neck/ back pain in utilizing the DTS table as a stand alone treatment. I will be honest- it was a tough decision initially because of the financial investment/ commitment while I was starting practice. I am glad that I decided to integrate the DTS into my practice from the start because of the referrals and the wonderful response from my patients. Thanks again for all your help over the last 2 years and continued support.
