Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How does Biofreeze work?
A: Biofreeze products are classified as topical analgesics, which work through a ‘counter irritant’ mechanism. This means that the menthol in Biofreeze creates a sensation that overrides pain signals to the brain. This process is known as ‘Gate Control Theory’, where nerve impulses from one stimulus block pain signals from reaching the brain. Recent research also suggests that menthol may stimulate cold receptors in the skin that may help regulate pain as well.
Q: What side effects and precautions should I be aware of for my patients, clients, or athletes?
A: When using this product avoid contact with eyes or mucous membranes. Do not apply to wounds or damaged skin. Do not use with other ointments, creams, sprays, or liniments. Do not apply to irritated skin. Do not apply if excess irritation develops. Do not bandage. Wash hands after use with cool water. Do not use with heating pad or device.
Q: Can Biofreeze be used with ice, heating pads, tape or wraps?
A: Biofreeze should not be bandaged or used with external heating pads as it may cause blistering. You can use Biofreeze before or after ice to extend the cryotherapy period. Only breathable wraps are recommended for using with Biofreeze

“While my practice does not rely heavily on modalities, there is one that I use on a daily basis—Biofreeze. It works on a wide variety of patients and conditions, and even our own published research has shown it to be more comfortable and effective than ice for [temporarily] reducing acute neck pain. Patients find it comfortable and long lasting, and they readily buy it, because it works great and is inexpensive and portable. This generates another revenue stream, which my private practice loves!”
